Key Information

BC West, formerly Adam and Judy Tavender’s Nakia Lodge, is a remote steelhead lodge

located on the Dean River in coastal British Columbia.

• The Dean is legendary due to a run of steelhead that is incredibly hot, bright and

hard-fighting.

• Our fishing program combines fishing above and below the Dean ‘falls’, allowing

access to a wide variety of water in a typical week.

• Our lodge is comfortable and casual, and is just a short walk from the river.

• Dean River king salmon share the same traits as their steelhead cousins—the hottest

kings in the world.

• Best-in-industry guides, camp staff, service level and camaraderie

FISHING

•
Our fishing program combines guided fishing below the falls with self-guided fishing

above the falls. On days spent below the falls, access is via jet boat, with guests receiving

guidance from a guide and being dropped off to fish through various runs. On days

spent above the falls, each guest gets an orientation on the various runs available and

then takes an ATV to access the river via a simple trail system. The mix of days spent

above and below the falls varies based on time of year and river conditions. All fishing is

done on foot.

• Most guests fish two handed rods in the range of 12 to 14 feet for a 7- to 9-weight line.

8- and 9-weight single-handed rods are also effective. While some fish on the Dean are

caught using floating lines and/or dry flies, most guests utilize sink-tip systems.

• Fishing occurs in two sessions each day. After an early breakfast, guests fish the

morning session and return mid-day for the day’s main meal. After a few hours of

down-time and often a nap, guests hit the water again for an evening session. The late

meal consists of heavy hors d’ouvres and is generally served around 10pm.

Facility

• BC West is located in the delta of the Dean, in a wooded area a short walk from the

river.

• Guests stay in simple cabins, with two cabins each housing two anglers and one cabin

housing four anglers.

• Mid-day meals are served in the main lodge building, which also includes the kitchen and

a living room.

• Evening meals are served in the ‘club house’, a separate lounge cabin that includes a

comfortable seating area, a shower and a fly tying room.

• Bathroom facilities include outhouses near the guest cabins, and a flush toilet in the main

lodge building.

Logistics and Pricing

• Pricing ranges from $5820 to $6560 and includes 7 nights and 6 days of fishing on the

Dean, meals, lodging, angling fees and the charter flight from Campbell River, BC.

• The flight from Campbell River to the Dean is provided by Vancouver Island Air and is

arranged for and paid for by the lodge.
